The Barbell Bear Post 10th Edition was released at the end of last week. The 10th edition of the post, which is a newsletter created by Shelbyville Strength Coordinator Royce Carlton, features columns written by junior Jalen Hounshell and sophomore Delaney Watson.
Jalen Hounshell (Soccer)
Working out really started sophomore year. I had started playing soccer sophomore year, so I had decided to join strength and conditioning with Coach Carlton. That class was my favorite class sophomore year and junior year so far. I wasn’t really the strongest kid growing up. Fitness has helped me realize what great things this class could bring me.
This class has really helped me grow mentally and physically. When you work hard, Carlton will recognize you and so will many other people; that can be the best feeling for someone who hasn’t had the best self confidence and was really small growing up. Joining fitness class has been one of the best decisions I’ve made so far.
Ever since joining the class I’ve been pushing myself to get better, and I’m glad I have friends that like to get stronger and better, because
I love going to the gym with my friends. That’s one of my favorite things to do in my free time. Working out has made me a better athlete overall.
I’m continuing to push myself to continue to workout and develop as an athlete. From sophomore year I was benching around 90 pounds. Then, to see by the end of sophomore year I could max out at 185 on bench is really exciting for me. Seeing improvement helps with my self confidence and really shows that the weight room has really paid off.
Delaney Watson (Volleyball, Track)
Being a student athlete requires a balance between academics and athletics. Finding this balance has been a struggle of mine in the past.
Fitness class has helped me gain a stronger focus on my priorities. It also creates a comfortable and safe environment.
When I come to class, I feel as if everyone is there for the same reason: to better themselves. The lack of academic stress and the presence of friends makes the class exciting.
After a couple months in fitness, my performance in both volleyball and track increased significantly. I noticed myself hitting harder and becoming faster. Carlton’s program helps me focus on my specific goals I want to achieve.
Whether it is beating my past max or successfully learning a new skill, I challenge myself to be better. I think this program has helped me because it gives me stamina.
We also focus on nutrition. The focus on nutrition taught me to respect my body and health. I began caring for my body, which strengthened my muscles and helped me grow.
Along with strength, I’ve noticed an increase in my attitude throughout the day. I come out of class feeling positive.
This helps boost my confidence as a person and athlete, which I used to lack. It gives me an energy boost on days I feel sluggish or stressed.
Everyday, I look forward to lifting and conditioning.
