Covid concern for three areas of North Wales as virus levels ease elsewhere

Covid infection rates have eased across North Wales in the past week but pockets of virus are constantly re-emerging.

Case figures dropped in five of the eight counties in the top half of the country, mirroring the general decline seen across the rest of Wales.

The latest national infection rate based on PCR tests, for the seven days up to February 6, now stands at 400.3 cases for every 100,000 people – well down on the 521.5 recorded a week ago.

Weekly lateral flow test data, published on Thursday, shows similar falls – the number of positives was down 4,376 to 18,690.

In those northern counties where Covid infection rates have risen since last weekend, the increases were marginal.

Despite the improving trend, all 109 MSOA districts in northern Wales reported at least one case in the most recent week’s figures.

MSOA districts are areas with a population of around 7,000 people.

Currently Llandudno South has the highest infection rate in North Wales (713.8 cases per 100,00 people).

However there are signs this mini spike may be ebbing – with Bangor City going in the opposite direction (667.1).

This district averaged 12 cases per day over the past week – the joint highest in Wales – and yesterday it recorded a further 19 positives.

An even bigger daily surge was in Aberystwyth North: it’s also averaging 12 cases-a-day but yesterday the district saw a further 27, easily the most in Wales.

Other places well above the national average infection rate include Caia Park, Flint North East and Hermitage & Whitegate (see table below).

But there was better news for long-suffering Rhyl, where virus levels now seem to be declining across its three districts.

Although community transmission is relatively high, the improving picture has encouraged the Welsh Government to further ease coronavirus restrictions this month. You can read what is planned here.
